The central asian republic of Tajikistan holds parliamentary elections on Sunday. Among the contesting parties is the Islamic Renaissance Party, the only legal Islamic party in the region. Rayhan Demytrie reports on why young people in Tajikistan are increasingly following an Islamic lifestyle.
"Strengthening Rule of Law and Human Rights to Empower People in Tajikistan" project results: better protection of individuals, tackling the issues of social protection and domestic violence along with improving civil registration status of the population in Ghonchi and Rasht districts.
Report by Robin Forestier-Walker for Al Jazeera English (broadcast 27th February 2010) Central Asia's only legal Islamic party is competing for seats in Tajikistan's parliamentary elections. Eight parties have registered, but the President's People's Democratic Party is expected to hold on to its massive majority. Critics warn of voting fraud, while the public are under pressure to back the governing party over a massive engineering project. In return they are being promised energy security.

DUSHANBE, Tajikistan, 1 October 2008 Zarrina (not her real name), 18, has been working as a prostitute for two years. She calls her work "a dirty job" but says she has no other means of making a living. She dreams of getting an education. Zarrina is involved in a UNICEF-supported, youth-friendly health services project targeting young sex workers, intravenous drug users and others vulnerable to the spread of HIV and AIDS, among other problems. The project aims to ensure that the most at-risk young people regularly visit special clinics, where they can receive treatment and counselling. The clinics also offer confidential testing for HIV and other diseases. To read the full story, visit: http://www.unicef.org/infobycountry/Tajikistan_45786.html

http://www.equalbeforethelaw.org/ In this video, Farzona Gafurova, a 4th year law student at Tajik State National University, recounts a typical legal consultation she gave while interning for "Equal Before the Law: Access to Justice in Central Asia," at the organization "Shoto" in Isfara, Tajikistan. A woman was habitually beaten to the point of hospitalisation by her husband, so she came to Shoto for help getting a divorce. After her consultation, her husband kept abusing her physically and psychologically until she was ready to commit suicide. She took him to court and he was convicted to 6 years in prison. This video was produced as part of "Equal Before the Law: Access to Justice in Central Asia" a 30 month project being implemented by the Eurasia Foundation with funding from the Mi...
Tajikistan's President Rakhmon has, according to a report by Eurasianet.org, approved the drafting of legislation that would limit the activities of foreign-funded non-governmental organizations; a move which closely mirrors that of the Putin regime in Russia. Opponents of the bill say should it come into force it would stop the vital work of hundreds of charitable organizations working on issues such as human rights and public health. In 2012 Russia's Putin signed a law that requires NGO's receiving foreign funding to register with the authorities as “foreign agents” – a phrase which in Russian refers to agents of espionage. After the collapse of the Soviet Union Tajikistan has seen a trend toward the reinforcement of traditional family values. According to Andrea Strasser-Camagni, Amnesty Internationals Tajikistan expert, these values see women treated as servants, or as the in-laws family property and lead to tragic outcomes, including suicide as a way of escape. Featuring interviews with survivors of domestic violence and womens rights activists, the video explores the physical, psychological and sexual abuse that women face at the hands of their husbands, partners and other family members.

www.fao.org/in-action/micca/ Nidhi Tandon introduced her experience assessing a pilot project on Climate Resilience (PPCR) in Tajikistan, noting gendered dimensions. She introduces the climatic context, noting that communities are often the first to deal with the impacts of climate change, and that communities also have innovative solutions at hand. Tandon argues that appreciating and supporting different gender roles can be a deciding factor as to whether rural adaptation or mitigation is efficient. More equal decision-making between women and men means that it is more likely that men and women would work together and support each other in their responsibilities. The presentation was part of a learning event on Gender and Climate-Smart Agriculture organized by Food and Agriculture Orga...

In September 2016 we took a spontaneous trip to Central Asian country of Tajikistan, which is less than 3 hours flight from Dubai. We only had two days, spending one of them exploring the capital, Dushanbe, and the second one driving out to the Hissar Fortress and into the Fann mountains to Iskanderkul, one of the most famous lakes in the country. Beautiful trip and with almost no tourism yet.

Travelling in jeeps in the high-altitude areas of the Pamirs! A trip filled with enormous breathtaking spaces and the cold beauty of the high Pamir Mountains. The famous Pamir Highway, M 41, is a high-altitude car road over 700 km long connecting Dushanbe, Khorog (Tajikistan) and Osh (Kyrgyzstan). The Pamir Highway is unpredictable and usually empty, featuring several passes over 4,000 m high. Along the whole length of the road there are very few car service centres and petrol stations. Currently, it is one of the most elevated paved roads having such length. M 41 forms the only vital artery connecting the isolated alpine regions of the Pamir Mountains with the rest of the civilised world. http://www.centralasia-travel.com/en

Kyrgyzstan, or the Kyrgyz Republic to give it its official name, is quite simply one of the most interesting, pristine and beautiful countries in Asia, offering the adventurous traveller a rich and rewarding destination. My name is Jonny Bealby, I founded Wild Frontiers, and in this short film I am going to talk about tourism in Kyrgyzstan. Although small, Kyrgyzstan is perfectly formed. The Tien Shan – or Mountains of Heaven – that stretch across its length and breadth are lush and green, high and wild, dissected by sweeping steppe lands, primal forests, crystal streams, turquoise lakes and lofty snow-capped peaks. I first rode through here on horseback in 1999 while writing a book and making a Discovery Channel film, and I thought then it really was one of the most beautiful countries I ...
