Tajikistan (i/tɑːˈdʒiːkᵻstɑːn/, /təˈdʒiːkᵻstæn/, or /tæˈdʒiːkiːstæn/; Тоҷикистон [tɔd͡ʒikɪsˈtɔn]), officially the Republic of Tajikistan (Tajik: Ҷумҳурии Тоҷикистон, Çumhuriji Toçikiston/Jumhuriyi Tojikiston; Russian: Респу́блика Таджикистан, Respublika Tadzhikistan), is a mountainous landlocked sovereign country in Central Asia. With an estimated 8 million people in 2013, it is the 98th most populous country and with an area of 143,100 km2 (55,300 sq mi), it is the 96th largest country in the world. It is bordered by Afghanistan to the south, Uzbekistan to the west, Kyrgyzstan to the north, and China to the east. Pakistan lies to the south separated by the narrow Wakhan Corridor. Traditional homelands of Tajik people included present-day Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan.
The territory that now constitutes Tajikistan was previously home to several ancient cultures, including the city of Sarazm of the Neolithic and the Bronze Age, and was later home to kingdoms ruled by people of different faiths and cultures, including the Oxus civilization, Andronovo culture, Buddhism, Nestorian Christianity, Zoroastrianism, and Manichaeism. The area has been ruled by numerous empires and dynasties, including the Achaemenid Empire, Sassanian Empire, Hephthalite Empire, Samanid Empire, Mongol Empire, Timurid dynasty, and the Russian Empire. As a result of the breakup of the Soviet Union, Tajikistan became an independent nation in 1991. A civil war was fought almost immediately after independence, lasting from 1992 to 1997. Since the end of the war, newly established political stability and foreign aid have allowed the country's economy to grow.
Central Asia is the core region of the Asian continent and stretches from the Caspian Sea in the west to China in the east and from Afghanistan in the south to Russia in the north. It is also sometimes referred to as Middle Asia, and, colloquially, "the 'stans" (as the six countries generally considered to be within the region all have names ending with the Persian suffix "-stan", meaning "land of") and is within the scope of the wider Eurasian continent.
In modern contexts, all definitions of Central Asia include these five republics of the former Soviet Union: Kazakhstan (pop. 17 million), Kyrgyzstan (5.7 million), Tajikistan (8.0 million), Turkmenistan (5.2 million), and Uzbekistan (30 million), for a total population of about 66 million as of 2013–2014. Afghanistan (pop. 31.1 million) is also sometimes included.
Various definitions of Central Asia's exact composition exist, and not one definition is universally accepted. Despite this uncertainty in defining borders, the region does have some important overall characteristics. For one, Central Asia has historically been closely tied to its nomadic peoples and the Silk Road. As a result, it has acted as a crossroads for the movement of people, goods, and ideas between Europe, Western Asia, South Asia, and East Asia.

http://www.equalbeforethelaw.org/ In this video, Farzona Gafurova, a 4th year law student at Tajik State National University, recounts a typical legal consultation she gave while interning for "Equal Before the Law: Access to Justice in Central Asia," at the organization "Shoto" in Isfara, Tajikistan. A woman was habitually beaten to the point of hospitalisation by her husband, so she came to Shoto for help getting a divorce. After her consultation, her husband kept abusing her physically and psychologically until she was ready to commit suicide. She took him to court and he was convicted to 6 years in prison. This video was produced as part of "Equal Before the Law: Access to Justice in Central Asia" a 30 month project being implemented by the Eurasia Foundation with funding from the Mi...
Culture is the source of identity through which people make sense of their place in the world. With globalization and increasing mobility, ethnic cultures are facing unprecedented challenges to survive. Many are trying to integrate with modern society while seeking to preserve their own identity, just like the traditional wedding cultures of the Tajiks in Xinjiang, northwest China. CGTN reporters went to Tashkurgan, the Tajik Autonomous County in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, to document the unique Tajik wedding ceremonies. Report by Robin Forestier-Walker for Al Jazeera English (broadcast 27th February 2010) Central Asia's only legal Islamic party is competing for seats in Tajikistan's parliamentary elections. Eight parties have registered, but the President's People's Democratic Party is expected to hold on to its massive majority. Critics warn of voting fraud, while the public are under pressure to back the governing party over a massive engineering project. In return they are being promised energy security.
TAJIKISTAN CELEBRATES 20 YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE
After the collapse of the Soviet Union Tajikistan has seen a trend toward the reinforcement of traditional family values. According to Andrea Strasser-Camagni, Amnesty Internationals Tajikistan expert, these values see women treated as servants, or as the in-laws family property and lead to tragic outcomes, including suicide as a way of escape. Featuring interviews with survivors of domestic violence and womens rights activists, the video explores the physical, psychological and sexual abuse that women face at the hands of their husbands, partners and other family members.

The 1951 Refugee Convention was a major advance for the protection of people under persecution, defining the concept of refugees and the legal obligation of States to provide them with protection. However, the current system has been put under great stress by the scale and complexity of recent developments, which was the motivation for organizing the UN High-Level Plenary on Addressing Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants in September 2016. Having an understanding of the relevant legal frameworks for the protection of refugees is, in this context, critical for those working in the humanitarian sector. This learning session provided an introduction to refugee law and other legal frameworks granting protection to refugees. Participants were provided with a presentation on the fundamenta...
Tajikistan's President Rakhmon has, according to a report by Eurasianet.org, approved the drafting of legislation that would limit the activities of foreign-funded non-governmental organizations; a move which closely mirrors that of the Putin regime in Russia. Opponents of the bill say should it come into force it would stop the vital work of hundreds of charitable organizations working on issues such as human rights and public health. In 2012 Russia's Putin signed a law that requires NGO's receiving foreign funding to register with the authorities as “foreign agents” – a phrase which in Russian refers to agents of espionage. In September 2016 we took a spontaneous trip to Central Asian country of Tajikistan, which is less than 3 hours flight from Dubai. We only had two days, spending one of them exploring the capital, Dushanbe, and the second one driving out to the Hissar Fortress and into the Fann mountains to Iskanderkul, one of the most famous lakes in the country. Beautiful trip and with almost no tourism yet.

Kyrgyzstan, or the Kyrgyz Republic to give it its official name, is quite simply one of the most interesting, pristine and beautiful countries in Asia, offering the adventurous traveller a rich and rewarding destination. My name is Jonny Bealby, I founded Wild Frontiers, and in this short film I am going to talk about tourism in Kyrgyzstan. Although small, Kyrgyzstan is perfectly formed. The Tien Shan – or Mountains of Heaven – that stretch across its length and breadth are lush and green, high and wild, dissected by sweeping steppe lands, primal forests, crystal streams, turquoise lakes and lofty snow-capped peaks. I first rode through here on horseback in 1999 while writing a book and making a Discovery Channel film, and I thought then it really was one of the most beautiful countries I ...

Backpacking in Central Asia, once part of the Soviet Union, should be a no brainer for the adventurous traveler among us. It seems like the majority of people in the Western world view this region as being dangerous. The countries all end with “Stan” which means “land of…”. I loved every minute of traveling in the Stans. I literally fell in love with the charming bazaars, the incredible hospitable people, sleeping in remote Yurtstays and enjoying the breathtaking mountain scenery. I tried my best to capture as much as authentic footage as possible in order to honor the countries with this shortfilm. I hope you're gonna enjoy Part I & II: Tajikistan & Kyrgyzstan.
